I think this in an important topic.
How is everyone going through the process?
Apparently they have just implemented a new system which has seen everything grind to a screeching holt.
I hear that people's plan have dropped out, suppliers are waiting to get paid, and getting into the program is taking a long time. I can vouch for this in that I put my first call into NDIS to get the ball rolling last November. Had my planning meeting (a vital part of the process) in April, had my final planning meeting 7 weeks ago and have heard nothing since. The new system sounds like a bit of a nightmare and because we (act) are the first cabs off the rank there are going to be teeth problems.
It going to be fabulous when it all comes together and if you are are unsure what to it's all about and what to do don't hesitate to ask.
I think one of the important things is to organise a Pre-Plan. This can be done through the MS Society or I used BCS (Belconnen Community Services). Melinda Gowty is her name and She came to my house - email Melinda.gowty@bcsact.com.au . Pre plan is an important part of the process to get you thinking about what you need. Start thinking of goals you would like to aim towards. Your pre plan through BCS is $600 but you can apply for a grant which is $1000 to pay for it. I have used the remainder to pay for some outstanding physio bills I had.
An example would be 'I want to stay as independent as I can in my own home'.
To reach this goal, I will need..
Bathroom and house modifications
Excercise equipment
Physiotherapist
Massage to help with muscle spasm
Continence AIDS
Cleaning assistance
Cooking assistance
Garden assistance
Car modifications
ECTEREA!
When I went to an information session at BCS the underlying message was THINK BIG!
The pre plan step is important to help you be clear about your needs.
The NDIS is available for anyone under 65 and I Implore everyone, if you haven't started, get the ball rolling now by making that first initial contact with NDIS by calling 1800 800 110.
I would love to hear everyone's experience so far. If you have questions please ask.
NDIS I think will be a great thing once they iron out the creases. I feel fortunate that we have this support system on our side
