Can anyone recommend a good way to book airline tickets? Virgin does not allow people who need assistance to complete online bookings. I frequently fly Canberra to Rockhampton return and I am fed up with talking to overseas call centres. I am thinking of finding a travel agent. Any suggestions? Birgit

I only hear about the negative experiences disabled have with flights. I'm sure someone will help you soon.

Hi Birgit, I booked to go to Bne for a night in July and was able to book the whole thing online for memory(?) I can recommend Maria at Maria Slater travel in Mawson if you are looking for a travel agent. She is very kind, has lots of empathy and I'm sure will be able to assist you with what you need. I have traveled a few times this year with my scooter and can say the only problems we have is the inconsistency of how they want to do the scooter. Do they want to take the scooter at checkin? Can we take it to the gate? Do we take the battery on board or check it in? It's different every time, just quite interesting to watch Happy Travels! I am sure Maria can help..

I would recommend going to a travel agent, they will book everything for you plus let the airline know you have a disability and make sure assistance is organised for you. I have used escape travel and flight centre to book holidays and flights. It was great because they made sure everything was set for me, stress free! All I needed to do is impatiently wait to go on my holiday!

I often book online, but only with Qantas (not Jetstar). You're supposed to call a number to register details of assisstance needed and mobility equipment, especially if with a dangerous good (e.g. battery) that needs prior approval. I've never gotten an overseas call centre when calling the required number. I've also forgotten to ring the required number many many times and never had them refuse me or my scooter (although there have sometimes been some grumbles that I should have rung ahead).
For more complex travel, I use Cara Chevers, currently managing Flight Centre Kingston (6284 6900). I've been using her for well over 10 years and have followed her from one agency to another. She is fantastic with ensuring that complex requests are accommodated as much as possible and she is very good at sorting through problems if/when they occur. She once even got an issue sorted on a Sunday after receiving a "just so you know" email from me that I hadn't expected her to see until the Monday.
Happy travelling
